How fit do I need to be to climb Kilimanjaro or Meru?

You do not need to be an athlete, but you should walk comfortably for 5 to 7 hours on consecutive days. Two or three months of regular hiking, stair work or jogging is enough preparation.

What happens if I get altitude sickness?

Your guide checks oxygen and pulse twice daily, carries bottled oxygen and a first aid kit, and we descend immediately if needed. AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation cover is arranged for every climb.

Which route and how many days should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Machame in 7 days and Lemosho in 8 days give the best acclimatisation and summit success. Marangu in 5 to 6 days is the budget hut route, while Mount Meru in 3 to 4 days is a superb shorter climb.

What gear do I need and can I rent it?

Warm layers, a four season sleeping bag, waterproof jacket and trousers, broken-in boots, headlamp and gloves. Anything you are missing can be rented in Arusha or Moshi, and I help you check the list before departure.

Are porters, food and park fees included?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Your price covers park fees, rescue fees, camping or hut, guides, cook, porters, all meals and transfers from Arusha or Moshi. Tips for the crew and personal gear are extra.
